How do you hang onto your brightest young talent and prepare them to lead? You start a mentorship program. Before creating a program, you must determine the needs of your population. There must also be a goal in mind that will define the groups ability to succeed. The program should enforce essential ingredients including education access, leadership training, and bonding.
To keep the program going, there should be an established schedule and topic of discussion for each meeting. Team building activities should also be included. Be sure to collect and analyze data on mentees' individual progress. Meeting after meeting, there will be new things added to the binder and portfolios for each mentee. As a result, the mentees will have a broader view of their future.

Getting Started
Step 1: Create a MOD Tri-fold Board:
This item will be needed for sneak-a-peek and open house at your school or location. It should feature pictures, the Men of Determination mission and purpose, and extracurricular activities the Men of Determination program at your school will provide. Be sure to provide a MOD Sign Up Worksheet (see appendix) on a clipboard for the tri-fold board presented at sneak-a-peek and open house at your school or location. This will allow young men interested in joining the group to provide their name, phone number, address, etc. to receive more information on how to join MOD.
Step 2: Create a MOD file folder on a thumb drive for MOD information, documents, and worksheets to be saved:
It is recommended that your thumb drive be able to hold at least 3Gs.
It is also recommended that on your school's staff drive you create a MOD file folder for MOD resources. The mentors within the school building may need access to the MOD folder and its resources on the staff drive.
Step 3: Create a MOD GPA TRACKING file folder within the MOD file folder for GPA tracking documents on the school student drive and/or staff drive:
On your school's student drive create a MOD GPA TRACKING file folder for MOD GPA Tracking resources. The mentees will need to access the MOD GPA TRACKING folder on the student drive to record and save their GPAs either weekly or bi-weekly.
Step 4: Reserve a facility:
Be sure to schedule and/or reserve sessions in the school's computer lab or any other location to hold regularly scheduled meetings and tutoring sessions.
You will need committed mentors to lead the mentees in the activities.
